VAFF is pleased to celebrate its 2019 Season and the 23rd Annual Festival celebration of Asian diaspora and diversity in film, set for November 7-10, 2019.
The VAFF 2019 theme of NO LIMITASIANS celebrates the achievements of Asian diaspora artists and empowers aspiring artists of Asian heritage to continue pushing boundaries and challenging expectations. As new filmmakers take the spotlight to tell authentic stories from their Asian and Asian diaspora experience, they break moulds and expose the world to a multitude of voices. They are telling the mainstream, “We are here to stay – now and forever. Anything is possible!“
The 2019 Season will begin with our annual Open Call for festival submissions on March 15th and a fundraiser screening (to be announced) in mid-May. In June, we will kick off our 14th annual Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (MAMM14) summer short film competition with the second annual Diversity in Filmmaking panel day – also part of our VAFF Industry Insight Panel Series as well as the open call for team applications to participate in #MAMM14. In July, the selected teams for MAMM14 will take part in our MAMMentorships program and receive specialized workshops from industry professionals and mentors. August will return of the MAMM14 Gala Screening and Awards Presentation August 31st, 2019 at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre. In September, look forward to another fundraising screening, followed by the media launch in October for our 23rd Annual Vancouver Asian Film Festival, taking place November 7-10, 2019 at Cineplex Odeon International Village Cinemas.
2019 will also see the second iteration of our AIM: Asians in Movies, Music, and Media program with the launch of our Asians in Music album project. Stay tuned for more details on this!
In summer of 2019, we launched an new initiative “100 Stories Challenge” which dedicated to creating more opportunities to share Asian Canadian stories through film and we hope that this particular challenge will encourage inter-generational dialogue and connections. We hope that by the end of this Challenge we will have collected more than 100 stories documenting the legacy of Asians in Canada. The 100 Stories Challenge is brought to you by the generous support of Richard K. Wong.
